West November News #4

Dear West Families,

Happy Thanksgiving week! This week our West students are celebrating AWESOME behavior with class Lego parties. Each classroom collectively saved 200 Power H tickets to earn the Lego Party. The Lego Party serves as the first monthly PBIS event that emphasizes students collaborating to achieve a common goal. This approach begins moving students toward more intrinsic motivation for positive behavior. 

The next PBIS class celebration is a Gingerbread House Making Party! This is a huge undertaking for our staff, and we need YOU to pull it off. We will be collecting decorating items, looking for volunteers to help pre-make the gingerbread houses and looking for volunteers to help support the party day. A huge thank you to all of our West families for having flexibility with the Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedure. We have made a couple adjustments for families who need to pick up at the West playground gate. Because of the traffic through the parking lot, it is very important that students do not run out into the lot or between cars. If you do use the West lot, please park and walk up to the gate to meet your student(s). Only pre-school families should enter the playground area. Here are a few quick reminders to keep our students safe and traffic running smoothly:

  • The front drive is for moving traffic. Please do not park in the drive and get out of your car.

  • Continue to pull as far forward as possible in the drive before stopping to allow as many cars as possible to pull up to the curb.

  • Pull up to the curb to have your student(s) get into your car.

  • Students will not be allowed to be motioned across traffic to get into a car. This is dangerous.

  • Adults walking up to the building, please stand to the sides of the front walkway to make room for teachers and students.

Learning News from Mr. Broadwater

Did you know that reading 10 minutes a night equates to roughly one million more words a year? This is such an amazing thing you can do with your child. Put down those screens and give it a try! Reading leads to vocabulary and language development! For thirty years, researchers have converged on this number. A child who reads for pleasure for 10 minutes a night will have a literate life. It really is that simple. 

The best way to overcome the challenge of getting kids to love reading is letting them choose books that they love. Have your child check out our Free Book Friday Collection and ask them what they like. Look for it at the library, or consider a magazine subscription as a birthday or holiday present.

Candy Cane Grams

Our West PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) team is running a Candy Cane Gram Sale the week of December 15th. Candy Cane Grams are a fun way for students to celebrate friendships and appreciation for others. Each Candy Cane Gram comes with a candy cane and handwritten card that is delivered to the recipient. Candy Cane Grams will cost .50 cents. All proceeds will go to fund our West Power H Store!

We are accepting donations of Candy Canes!! Please consider donating a box or two to help with the Candy Cane Gram sale!
