From the Desk of Dr. Davis, HPS Superintendent | Continuation of Return to School Plan

Despite the State Supreme Court’s ruling that Governor Whitmer “ did not have authority after April 30, 2020, to issue or renew any executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic”, at this time, HPS is not altering the health and safety protocols in our Preparedness Plan.

Good day,

I write to you this weekend to update you on the status of Holland Public Schools' Return to Learn Plan.

Despite the State Supreme Court’s ruling that Governor Whitmer “ did not have authority after April 30, 2020, to issue or renew any executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic”, at this time, HPS is not altering the health and safety protocols in our Preparedness Plan. School will resume on Monday in the same manner that we left on Friday.

To date, we have not had a positive COVID-19 case related to school activity. As such, we believe that our plan is working. The Board of Education and I believe that the best course of action at this time is to continue with the implementation of the elements of our plan to continue the focus on safety and well-being of our staff, students, and academic learning opportunities.

We continue to work with the Ottawa County Department of Public Health under the guidelines of the CDC, which have not changed as a result of this ruling.

I am waiting for legal interpretation on how Governor Whitmer’s Return to School Roadmap is impacted by the court’s decision, if at all. I am meeting with area superintendents, health care professionals, politicians, and legal counsel at 8:00 am on Monday, October 5.  I anticipate that we will get further guidance at that time and recommendations on how the court’s decision should be applied at the local level.

Our Board of Education has a scheduled work study session in the evening of October 5 where we will continue the conversation.

As always, I appreciate your patience during this process.

Have a nice weekend,

Dr. Brian Davis
