School Climate Surveys

Holland Public Schools has been participating in Michigan’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MiMTSS) to enhance positive behavior supports in our school. We are pleased with our results to date and our ability to recognize students who demonstrate positive behavior at school while at the same time teaching students appropriate ways to engage with their teachers, peers and learning environment. 

The School Climate Survey is a student perception survey as part of our participation with MiMTSS.  This survey is anonymous.  We will not know how your child, an individual parent, or a staff member responds to individual items. 

• The survey for elementary school students (grades 3-5) includes 11 questions and should take no more than 10–15 minutes to complete. Students will complete this survey during class. Additionally, there are demographic questions, including grade, gender, race, and ethnicity. (Learn more about MiMTSS at the Michigan Technical Assistance Center website.)
   
• The survey for middle and high school students (grades 6 and up) includes 9 questions and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Students will complete this survey in their class. Additionally, there are demographic questions, including grade, race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, and sexual orientation. Students always have the option to mark “I prefer not to answer” for all demographic questions. You may learn more about MiMTSS at the Michigan Technical Assistance Center website.)

The data collected from the survey will be used to identify student perceptions of school climate issues within our school. School staff use the results to inform our efforts at improving our school climate. Demographic data is needed in order to disaggregate the results by different groups to look at perceptions of school climate from different students’ perspectives. There are also parent and staff versions of the survey that will be examined along with the student results.

We will be administering a survey this Fall and Spring to parents, teachers and students to benchmark our progress to date in these areas.

Responses are housed securely and in an anonymous format with the University of Oregon Technical Assistance Center projects for evaluation research purposes. All evaluation research projects are in compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, (343 CFR 99.31 (6)) and human subjects regulations (Protection of Human Subjects 45 CFR 46).

Per our Board Policy 2416-Procedures for Inspection of Materials Used in Conjunction with any Survey, Analysis, or Evaluation; if you would like to review this survey in advance, you may do so by contacting the school office. If upon review, at a parent’s discretion, you may request that your child be excused from participation.

Our desire is to involve parents in their children’s education. Working together we can continue our forward progress of establishing a building climate and culture that ensure high levels of academic rigor and instruction in the classroom and ensuring that all students share equitable access for participation.
