HHS Hosts Family Session on Teen Mental Health in the Social Media Age
Holland High School families are invited to an informative and interactive session with Hope College professor Dr. David Myers from 4–5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, in the Holland High School Performing Arts Center.
Dr. Myers will present relevant research on teen mental health in the social media age, including the rise in teen depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation during the smartphone era. He will also discuss research from social psychologists examining the effects of smartphones and social media on adolescents. The session will highlight emerging global efforts to create phone-free schools and delay social media access for younger teens.
In addition to sharing easy-to-understand research and data, Dr. Myers will offer practical steps families can take to support their teens’ mental health and help them develop healthier relationships with technology.
Earlier that day, Dr. Myers will present to Holland High School staff, helping ensure that both educators and families have access to this important information. Creating a shared understanding among the adults who support young people is an important step toward helping students navigate technology, social media, and their mental health.
The event is part of Holland High School’s ongoing family engagement efforts. During previous “Pastries and Principals” gatherings, families expressed interest in more interactive opportunities centered on topics they could explore alongside their students. Technology, social media, and teen mental health were among the areas families identified as most important.
Families are encouraged to attend with their teens so they can learn together and continue the conversation at home.
