Connor Fowler Receives Teachers Live Here Grant

Connor Fowler is the latest HPS Teacher to receive a Teachers Live Here grant. He was awarded $27,300 in down payment assistance toward the purchase of a home in the area.

Mr. Fowler is a PE Teacher at Jefferson and HLA.

The best way to learn about what your students' lives are like outside of school is by living in the same community and neighborhoods that they do. As a PE teacher, this allows you to be able understand some of the common challenges students and families face. For example, what areas of town have access to parks, fields, and courts. This then allows you to create more relevant and realistic lessons for your students based on the accessibility to different local areas.

It is crucial for students to view their teachers as positive role models in and out of school. In order for you to model positive behavior for your students outside of school it is best to live in the area that your students do. As a PE teacher, your job is to encourage your students to make healthy decisions and promote lifelong physical activity. Living in the community allows you to model being active by running, biking, being outside, exercising at the Holland Aquatic Center and many more activities. Modeling a healthy and active lifestyle for students will help them see physical activity as something that happens all the time, not just at school.

With a strong belief in the impact HPS teachers are having on students and families in the district and with an understanding of the value they bring to the community as a whole, generous community members are investing in Teachers Live Here.  Teachers Live Here grants are administered through the Holland Educational Foundation.
