A Day in Kindergarten
From the morning bell to recess; learn more about how your child will spend the day learning at Kindergarten.
Kindergarten Curriculum:
Science
- Kindergartners will explore Next Generation Science Standards in these units of study that are integrated into the reading
Writing
- Through a writing workshop (MAISA Writing Units) approach with specifc instruction, students will learn skills such as:
- Selecting a topic
- Selecting and writing a story from their own experiences
- Writing words using initial sounds
- “Stretching” words to include all the sounds they can hear
Social Studies
- Student will focus on learning about Myself and My World in:
- Social Settings
- Nutrition and healthy living
- Safety
- Read about their community & world through “World of Words”
Reading
- Kindergarten students will receive a 120 minute block of reading time daily using either Journeys or Senderos (TWBI). In reading workshop students will focus on the following skills:
- Knowing the difference between letters and words
- Distinguishing between upper and lower case letters
- Mastering letter names and sounds
- Identifying and reading the most frequently used kindergarten words
- Mastering phonemic awareness skills of rhyming, syllables, phoneme blending and segmenting
- Developing reading skills through emergent readers
Math
- Kindergartners will use hands-on activities, as well as paper and pencil to study concepts such as:
- Sorting
- Making Patterns
- Identifying, Writing and Using Numbers to 20
- Counting by 1s and10s to 100
- Adding and Subtracting to 5
Identifying Basic and 3-D Shapes
Specials
- Music Once a Week
- Students will explore pitch, beat & tempo and will:
- Sing
- Listen to Music
- Listen for Rhythm
- Physical Education Once a Week
- Students participate in games and activities to develop gross motor and other skills
- STEM Once a Week
- Students will will learn to discuss, plan and execute projects that are Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related.
