Nurse Notes - December

As we approach the holiday season, it’s important to keep in mind that we need to take care of ourselves physically and emotionally. To balance holidays and health, we should think about prioritizing self-care.

Our monthly newsletter from the Holland Hospital School Nurses.

Here are some suggestions to make the holidays less stressful and more joyful:

  • Eat mindfully: Enjoy the food that makes our holidays so special but be mindful of the portions so you can enjoy a variety of options. Also keep a balance of still consuming fruits and vegetables.
  • Get adequate sleep: With multiple holiday activities, we still need to maintain a consistent sleep schedule to keep up our energy and prevent drowsiness. Adequate sleep is also important for a good immune system.
  • Stay active: The goal is to move more and sit less. Incorporate physical activity like taking walks or dancing. Decide to take the stairs at every opportunity.
  • Safe travel: When traveling by car of plane to visit family, there are a few things to consider. One is staying hydrated. Consider masking up, especially if you have a suppressed immune system.
  • Minimize stress: Don’t feel like everything needs to be perfect and set realistic expectations. Take time for relaxation.

The School Nurse program is a partnership with Holland Hospital to provide a school nurse in every HPS building.
