Nurse Notes - October

Halloween Safety  - Kids love the magic of Halloween, but costume and traffic safety are essential for trick-or-treaters. Here are some tips to keep everyone safe.

Costume Safety

  • Choose a costume that won’t cause safety hazards - all costumes should be fire-resistant.
  • Opt for Halloween makeup over masks - test the makeup in a small area before applying to check for allergic reactions.
  • Remove all makeup before bed to avoid irritation.

When they are out Trick or Treating

  • An adult should accompany young children while out in the neighborhood.
  • If your older kids are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you. Agree on a time they will return home.
  • Teach your children to never get into a strangers car or home.
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid food allergies.
  • Cross the street as a group at crosswalks and don’t assume that cars are going to stop.

Safety tips for motorists

  • Watch for children on roadways, medians and curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways carefully.
  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
