Nurse Notes - October
Halloween Safety - Kids love the magic of Halloween, but costume and traffic safety are essential for trick-or-treaters. Here are some tips to keep everyone safe.
Costume Safety
- Choose a costume that won’t cause safety hazards - all costumes should be fire-resistant.
 - Opt for Halloween makeup over masks - test the makeup in a small area before applying to check for allergic reactions.
 - Remove all makeup before bed to avoid irritation.

When they are out Trick or Treating
- An adult should accompany young children while out in the neighborhood.
 - If your older kids are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you. Agree on a time they will return home.
 - Teach your children to never get into a strangers car or home.
 - Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid food allergies.
 - Cross the street as a group at crosswalks and don’t assume that cars are going to stop.

Safety tips for motorists
- Watch for children on roadways, medians and curbs.
 - Enter and exit driveways carefully.
 - Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
