HHS Course Planning Tool

The Holland High School Counseling Department is pleased to announce the beginning of our course planning activities, in the Multi Year Academic Planning tool, within Infinite Campus.  This feature will allow your student to build a roadmap to and through the high school graduation requirements.

The Multi Year Academic Planning tool captures the work students have completed and offers recommendations for next and most appropriate courses in any core content sequence.  This tool allows future plans to change while maintaining the integrity of plans in action.  It is the hope of the Counseling Department that with the introduction of this tool, parents feel more engaged in the course planning process, and have a better understanding of all the possibilities for meeting the Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements as well as requirements for earning a Holland High School diploma. Some of the features include:

  • 4 year academic planning
  • Postsecondary planning
  • Online Parent Approval

Please note- if your child is choosing to attend Holland Early College, please choose courses with “HEC” after the course name.  For example EN100HEC - English 1A or MA201HEC - Geometry A

For middle school families, counselors from Holland High School will be at Holland Middle School presenting in their classes during the week of February 19, 2024.  Middle School Students will be able to make changes to their course plans until 3:00 PM on March 22, 2024.

For high school families, the online planning window will open on February 19, 2024, your students will work in core classes to select courses.  Counselors will then start meeting with students individually and in small groups starting  February 26, 2024.  Current high school students will be able to make changes to their course plans until 3:00 PM on March 22, 2024.

It is our hope that you will be an integral part of this process. You and your student will be able to access the Infinite Campus Portal via the Holland High Schools’ website to begin your child’s course planning. Students will receive instructions and other valuable planning information during their Advisory classes. The Course Guide can be found HERE should you need information about class offerings.

Parents are asked to discuss course plans with their students. Our master schedule is built and driven by initial course selections. Selecting appropriate courses on the initial course plan is extremely important. After the scheduling process is completed, changes are discouraged and will be based on the following criteria: to correct deficiencies, to correct placement errors, and to ensure enrollment in classes required for graduation.

If you are involved in assisting your student in selections, please keep the following in mind:

  • Classes that have an A and a B section should both be selected (i.e. English A, English B).
  • If your child is choosing to attend Holland Early College, please choose courses with  “HEC” after the course name.  For example EN100HEC - English 1A or MA201HEC - Geometry A
  • All music students please select the course in which you are currently enrolled. Course selections will be adjusted after auditions.
  • Remember to check prerequisites in the course guide before making a selection.
  • Remember Advanced Placement and music performance courses are year-long commitments and may have summer requirements.  Select these courses with certainty; this requires a high level of commitment
  • Please remember that these course plans are requests, NOT guarantees.
  • Please remember to save changes before logging out of Portal.

Below are a few additional links you may find useful as you work through the course planning process.

Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.

Multi Year Academic Planning Guide - For High School Students, Parents, and Guardians

Choosing high school classes is a process that may raise many questions.  The following steps will assist you in selecting courses for the 2024-25 academic year as well as build your academic plan.

Tools:

  • Graduation Audit Worksheet:  Holland High School requires the successful completion of the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) and three general elective credits to earn a high school diploma.  A total of 22 credits are required for high school graduation.
  • Holland High Course Guide and HHS Course List: View all courses offered at Holland High
  • Academic Planning in students’ Infinite Campus Portal account:  Plan your classes for next year.

How to Complete the Academic planning tool:

This guide will walk parents and students through the process of planning and requesting courses for next year. This tool will be open and available to students in March. If your child is choosing to attend Holland Early College, please choose courses with  “HEC” after the course name.  For example EN100HEC - English 1A or MA201HEC - Geometry A

Step One:     Login to Portal

Step Two:     Click on Academic Planner

Step Three:   Select a Post-Grad Location from the dropdown box.  This is identifying your intention to live In-State or to move Out-of-State after high school.

Step Four:    Select a Post-Grad Plan from the dropdown box.  This is identifying what your plans are, as of right now, for life after high school.

Step Five:       Select Next

Step Six:   Choose your four core classes.

English:

  • English 1 goes to English 2 or Honors English 2.

  • Honor’s English  goes to English or to Honors AP Language.

Math:

  • Algebra 1 goes to Geometry.

  • Geometry goes to Algebra 2.

  • Talk with the teacher for appropriate courses beyond Algebra 2.

Note:  Two years of the same foreign language is required in the MMC. It is highly recommended that all students, especially those considering a four year college/university option, take 3 to 4 years of the same foreign language.  Other foreign languages can be taken online (very difficult).

Step Eight: Visual, Performing, Applied Art (VPAA)

Choose: Current Band, Orchestra or Choir placement.

Note:  Band, Orchestra, or Choir placements are made by high school instructor after an audition.

Or, Choose Art: Intro to Art is the foundation for all other Art Electives.  See the course guide for full descriptions or talk with one of the art instructors.

Or many other VPAA options as found on our HHS Course List

Step Nine: Health or PE

Health (state required health course)

PE (state required course or you can complete a PE Waiver for outside activity)

Step Ten: Save your plan!

Please know that your child will walk through the above steps the week of March 15 in their core content and advisory classes.  As you and your child go through this process there are bound to be questions. If you or your child still has questions after he/she has gone through the guided activities and sought recommendations from the teachers that know them best, please feel free to reach out to your child’s counselor using the email addresses below.  They will be happy to assist you!
