This creative group of students plays an active role in the leadership of CultureWorks and meets for 9-12 weeks in the fall and spring semesters. Nominated by instructors and peers, these students are invited to attend a yearly leadership retreat in the fall, and asked to commit to a one-year term that can be renewed each year. This spring we will focus on recognizing and developing resilience through poetry, led by Alexis Rosado of Became Brave.

Did you know that prehistoric dragonflies had wing spans of 2 feet? Or that the giant luna moth has no mouth or digestive system? We’ll take a closer look at some of earth’s most fascinating bugs and insects through this introductory  illustration class. We’ll use inks, gouache, charcoal, digital drawing, and watercolor to illustrate our favorite creepy crawlies, and we’ll take field trips to Hope College’s bio department to check out their insect collection and to Frederik Meijer  Gardens as well.

Open Studio: Upcycled Art with Emily Christensen and Miranda Craig

Open Studio returns! As always, students will have access to all our materials and equipment, plus a short lesson on something new every week. This semester we’ll use upcycling as a guide, repurposing old materials to make new art. If you’re interested in working with found objects, considering the environment as you make art, or being challenged to think outside the box, this is the class for you!

This activity is supported in part by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Join Jaer this semester as he brings photography to life in three dimensions. This class will teach the basics for beginners, but also offer creative ways to manipulate images to make them more interactive. Students will learn the fundamentals of camera use, such as shutter speed and aperture, to take clear, compelling photos. As students gain foundational skills, the class will move from creating 2-D images to thinking about ways to make photographs interact with the space in which they are housed. In doing so, students will learn to create images that interact with their environment in 3-D.

Has the weight of the world been on your shoulders? Have you wanted to speak up for the earth, but didn’t know how? Join us in this class as we use screen printing techniques to address environmental concerns. Dr. Lee Kang will be teaching a parallel class at Hope College, and at the end of the semester we will have the opportunity to hold a joint critique and show.
