2022 Seal of Biliteracy Board Recognition
High School Juniors and Seniors can apply for the Seal of Biliteracy to appear on their transcript. This prestigious award is given to students who are fluent and literate in two or more languages. Keep reading for more information about qualifications and how to obtain the Seal of Biliteracy.
Who can earn a Seal of Biliteracy?
- Juniors (2nd semester) and Seniors.
- Students who earn a Holland Public Schools Diploma.
- Students who can show literacy and fluency in a language other than English in one of the following ways:
- Transcript from a school in another country showing at least one year of instruction in all subjects in a language other than English in Grade 6 or beyond.
- Demonstrating an Intermediate High proficiency on an acceptable world language assessment:
- Holland Public Schools uses and will pay for the assessment fee on the AAPPL assessment.
- Other assessments will be the responsibility of the parent unless AAPPL does not offer the language needed.
- For languages not available on an acceptable world language assessment, the Seal of Biliteracy Committee will work with the student and an interpreter to document an Intermediate High proficiency.
How do I apply and get a Seal of Biliteracy?
- Student applies for Seal of Biliteracy by completing a short application prior to March 6.
- If an assessment is needed, the student will take the assessment in March of their junior or senior year. This year's tests are on March 15 and 17, 2023; 12:00 - 3:00 pm in the Admin Board Room.
- Once all requirements are met, students will be recognized at an HPS Board meeting and at graduation. A digital seal will be placed on the transcript.
Why is this a great step to take?
- Bilingualism is a unique asset that graduates can offer to their university, college and/or future employers.
- You will have a certificate number that you can include on applications and professional platforms such as LinkedIn.
- The Michigan Department of Education now recognizes the Seal of Biliteracy.
