Hope to Teach

Holland Public Schools is proud to partner with Hope College to launch the region’s first Teacher Preparation Early College Program!

Holland Public Schools is proud to partner with Hope College to launch the region’s first tuition-free Teacher Preparation Early College Program. Like many other states, Michigan is facing a teacher shortage, and many school districts are exploring “grow-your-own” programs to expand the pool of highly qualified teacher candidates.

Building upon the existing highly-successful Early College model, Holland High School students will have a tuition-free opportunity to begin taking courses at Hope College in their Junior year of high school, on the path to complete the first two years of their Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

“Since 2014, Holland Public Schools has collected a body of evidence that proves the effectiveness of Early College programs. The ability to offset college costs, while challenging oneself academically and connecting to a well-developed career pathway has proven to be transformative for countless families in Holland Public. “ - Andrea Mehall, HEC Director

Students are invited to apply for the program at the end of their Sophomore year, and applications will be evaluated holistically, including a review of GPA, credit check, and teacher input. Holland Public Schools is also committed to diversifying our future teachers so they are more representative of our student population.

“A career in teaching can be incredibly rewarding.  If you are hoping for a career through which you can contribute to society and make a real difference in the world, teaching might be the career for you!  We are excited about this opportunity to proactively respond to the growing teacher shortage, while we encourage our own amazing students to become teachers!” -Dana Loveland, HEC Counselor

If you or someone you know is interested in the program, HEC is currently seeking applicants for Fall 2022. Please contact Dana Loveland or Andrea Mehall for more information:
