Nurse Notes - February
It’s dark, it’s cold, are spring and summer ever going to get here? Living in Michigan, winter can seem like it lasts forever. Many people go through a time of decreased energy and sadness. This is often called the winter blues. The winter blues are often mild and clear up on their own in a short amount of time.
You can help beat the winter blues by:
- Getting outside everyday, even for just a few minutes
- Stay socially connected, make plans with friends and family
- Eat a healthy diet with a wide variety of fruits, veggies, protein and complex carbohydrates
- Establish a good sleep routine. Oversleeping can actually make you more tired
- Try a new winter activity such as skiing or skating
- Practice mindfulness-meditation, journaling, deep breathing
- Start or continue a regular exercise routine
- Light therapy, light lamps can be purchased online
If you are experiencing persistent sadness, loss of interest in things you have previously enjoyed, or are having difficulty eating or sleeping, you may have a more severe condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Please reach out to your health care provider if you are having any of these symptoms.
