Sports
Women's Tennis: On a warm and windy day, the Lady Dutch Varsity Tennis team hosted the Crusaders of Unity Christian. Holland swept the doubles and took three of the four singles matches to pick up the 7-1 conference victory. "The team played with a lot of energy and fight today," said Holland coach Kyle Kreps. "We're starting to hit our stride and I like the direction were heading." Holland will host Byron Center tomorrow in showdown between two regional opponents.
Women's Soccer: On Monday night, Holland hosted conference foe and defending state champion Spring Lake and lost 3-1. Holland was down 1-0 after the half, but senior Ashley Saldana struck from outside the box to tie up the score. Holland conceded two more times despite their tremendous effort. "Spring Lake plays with speed and precision," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "Despite their quality, I was very proud of our effort and intensity. We fought to the final whistle." The game was dedicated to former Holland player Gabbie Hosta, who tragically passed away last fall. A scholarship fund for the Holland Soccer Camp for young players in financial need was established in her name. Holland is now 4-7 and travels to Hamilton on Wednesday. In JV action, the Holland JV lost to Spring Lake 4-0.
Softball: The Holland varsity softball team Hosted their own Invitational over the weekend at Matt Urban complex. Holland finished pool play 1-2 on the day. The Dutch lost to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in game 1, bounced back to beat Saugatuck in game 2, and lost to pool play champion Grose Point South in the final game of the day. Addyson Hill picked up her first win of the season defeating Saugatuck 20-5 in 3 innings. ''Overall, we played pretty well today. We started out slow, digging ourselves a big hole in the first inning of game one, but after that, we competed throughout the day. There was some really good softball going on throughout the day. We had some exceptional teams competing in this tournament and it was good for our girls to see the many different levels of competition. The 4 teams in the upper division are currently ranked in the top 15 in the state. We face Unity this coming week, which is currently ranked 3rd in division 2, and I can't wait to see how respond," coach Hill said. The Dutch drop to 1-11 on the season. They will host Hamiton on Tuesday and travel to Unity Christian on Thursday to continue conference play.
Women's Track and Field: Holland Girls Varsity vs Holland Christian Schools (25 - 112) Loss. Men's Track and Field:
On a bright and sunny day, Holland hosted Holland Christian for a dual meet in OK Black competition. The Maroons took the first relay of the day, but the Dutch responded by sweeping 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the 110m hurdles and 100m dash, as well as winning the 800m relay. It was a back and forth competition all afternoon. As the meet was coming to an end, the points were almost even and the athletes and coaches knew it would be close. The boys 1600m relay got underway with much excitement, as both teams felt the result could decide who would win the meet. Holland opened with the lead in the first leg, then the Maroons took the lead with the second leg. On the third leg, Holland’s Naz Estrada fought back to reclaim the lead at the handoff and Senior Captain, Harper Prutch circled the track holding onto first place. The final score was Holland 75 - 62 Holland Christian, which meant the race didn’t need to be won, but the boys wanted to win that relay to be sure. The Dutch were led by Harper Prutch, who scored first place in the 110m and 300m hurdles and anchored the 800m relay and 1600m relay teams that also took first place. First place finishers were: 400m Relay Team of Jamonte Rodgers, Odis Fickel, Tray Knox, Usher Laurencio (45.95), 800m Relay Team of Xander Esparza, Emerson Wolbrink, Finn Galloway, Prutch (1:36.43), 1600m Relay Team of Galloway, Rian Powers, Naz Estrada, Prutch (3:32.87), Prutch - 110m Hurdles (16.96), 300m Hurdles (42.78), Knox - 100m (11.30), 200m (22.9), Galloway - 400m (53.69), Arthur Powell - Shot Put (38’ 7”), and Seth Rodriguez - Discus (109’ 7”). Second place finishers: Rodgers - 100m, 200m, Long Jump, Alex French - 110m Hurdles, and Rodriguez - Shot put. Third place finishers: Usher Laurencio - 100m, Quinn Bloemendaal - 400m, Aiden Lambers - 1600m, Ethan Mercado - 110m Hurdles, Estrada - 300m Hurdles, Daeleon White - Shot Put, Jay Chesser - Discus, Powell - High Jump, Angel Cortez - Pole Vault, and Dieudonne Bahati - Long Jump. The Holland boys had a total of 64 individual PRs set on this beautiful day. They ran fast and earned their first win of the season in league competition. Let’s go Dutch!
Word of the Day
Furtive describes something that is done in a quiet and secret way to avoid being noticed. It can also mean "expressive of stealth" or "sly" (as in "a furtive look"), or "obtained underhandedly" (as in "furtive gains").
We exchanged furtive smiles across the table, carefully not to attract the teacher's attention.
