Men's Basketball: The Dutch used two quick runs to pull away from Hamilton 53-33 on Friday, Jan. 16, at the Dutch Dome in Holland's annual Be Nice Game. Xavier Murphy scored twice, Keegan Hulst hit a 3-pointer, and Andrew Legg followed with a basket in the paint to put the Dutch up 17-9 late in the second quarter. Holland led 22-11 at halftime. "We talked about defense a lot and this was our best game boxing out and getting in the gaps, keeping them out of the paint," Holland coach Andrew Meeuwsen said. "We strung some runs together. Josiah VanHekken was great at the end. We challenged him to get to the rim more, and he responded well." VanHekken scored 15 in the second half. Keegan Hulst had 12 points, while Murphy had 10 and Legg had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Wrestling: Holland Wrestling — Holt Team Tournament Recap: Guaranteed 12th Place Finish, Holland competed in a strong field at the Holt Team Tournament, wrestling five duals on the day while gaining valuable experience with a young lineup and missing several key starters. The Dutch showed toughness throughout the bracket and battled in every round. Team Scores • Round 1: Holland 50, Holt 27 • Round 2: Romeo 66, Holland 12 • Round 3: Forest Hills Northern 43, Holland 23 • Consolation: St. Clair Shores Lake Shore 45, Holland 31 • 11th Place Match: Parma Western 39, Holland 36. Several wrestlers put together strong days across multiple matches. Makario Stark led the way with another consistent performance and reached a major career milestone by earning his 100th career win, a testament to his work ethic and leadership as a senior captain. Aiden Segovia had a productive day with key wins throughout the tournament, while Mikkel Adams continued to be a steady presence in the lineup. Lawrence Wade and Damion Jordan both picked up multiple wins and showed continued growth. Holland also gained valuable contributions and mat time from Manuel Garza, Adrian English, Luciano Gomez, Noah Reinschild, Lizbeth Carrillo, and Jayden Ky-De La Rosa. With many freshmen in the lineup and several starters unavailable, the Dutch fought hard from start to finish. The experience gained at Holt will pay dividends as the season moves forward. Holland finishes the Holt Team Tournament 12th overall, proud of the effort, growth, and milestone moments from the day.
Word of the Day
Something described as ephemeral lasts only for a very short time.
The performance was not recorded, a fact that made its ephemeral nature all the more poignant.
