Notes from the Nurse, All School Popcorn Sale Fundraiser, and more!

Notes from the Nurse

With flu season right around the corner this year, keeping sick children home from school is more important than ever. While prevention is the key, there may be times when your child does become ill with the flu. In order to protect the health of other students and school staff, children who are sick should not attend school. Students who are sick should remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicines. With our new COVID protocols it’s even more important than ever to do what we can to keep our kids healthy. If students show any of the COVID symptoms, they will need to stay home for 10-14 days unless they test negative for COVID or get an alternative diagnosis from your health care provider. Thanks for your help in keeping our school as healthy as possible.

All School Popcorn Sale Fundraiser

On Monday Nov. 16 our All School Popcorn Sale Fundraiser will begin. This year the entire sale will be done virtually. You will be able to go online to order what you need for the Holiday Season. You will also be able to share the link with friends and family so they can order and it will be delivered to their homes. Your child will bring home an information packet explaining how it works, so look for it in their backpack on Nov. 13. The money raised from this sale will help support field trips and other school related needs for our kids here at Holland Heights. The official sale will run for two weeks, but you can order up to Dec. 14 and still get it delivered to you by Christmas.

We want to make this as easy as possible for your child to sell and support our school. The school receives 50% from each sale!!! The classroom that sells the most items will also earn a Reward TBD!!! Monthly Parent ZOOM meeting w/Mr. Derr – Thursday Nov. 19 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM.

Parent Meetings

Thursday Nov. 19 will be our second monthly parent meeting with Mr. Derr. Plan to meet from either 9:00 – 9:30 AM or 6:30 – 7:00 PM. This will be a time for you to hear about any new updates around Covid protocols, PBIS and any other new things happening at Holland Heights. This is also a time to ask questions you might have about any of those topics or anything else on your mind about Holland Heights. The link to the ZOOM will be emailed out the week of the meeting, so make sure to check you email or texts for that link.

PBIS Update

Thank you so much for all the parents who took the time to complete our School Climate Survey this Fall. A few celebrations to share:

  • Our overall score increased to 3.66 (from 3.58) indicating that parents feel positively about the school climate here at Heights
  • School Safety was ranked the highest out of all of the categories
  • Our 3rd-5th grade students also took the Fall School Climate Survey:
  • Overall score increased from 3.07 to 3.18
  • The items with the greatest increase were Question 5 "Teachers treat me with respect" and "I feel safe at school"

Parental Involvement is always an area where we can improve. If you are available to serve on our POWER Partners committee to support positive behavior at Heights we would love to have your support! Contact Tesha Post at tpost1@hollandpublicschools.org or at 616-494-2358 to volunteer 30 minutes a month (it is a Zoom meeting) on a Friday morning from 9-9:30am.

Winter Reminders

As we near the cold winter season, it is very important that we make sure our children are coming to school with the appropriate clothing. We will be going outside during the school day, so please be sure to have your child dressed for the weather. A winter jacket, gloves/mittens, hat, and boots should be worn to school each day. Your child can bring a pair of shoes to wear during class time in their backpack or they can leave them here at school in their locker or by their hook. We do have a few donated winter weather clothing items, so let us know if there is something we can help you out with.

Free Hats and Mittens!!!!

We had a local business/community member donate a large amount of winter hats and mittens for our learners at Holland Heights. Our plan is to give every student one hat and one pair of knit gloves to help with keeping them warm this winter. We are very thankful for this donation and hope this helps all of our families prepare for the winter months ahead. We know that many of you may have already purchased these items for your kids, but this just gives you an extra one because we all know that these get lost/misplaced at times so a backup is always helpful.
