Wellness & School Climate Surveys

Information about these surveys and how to opt your student out of participating.

SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY

Holland Public Schools has been participating in Michigan’s Promoting Positive School Climate (PPSC) project to enhance positive behavior supports in our school. We are pleased with our results to date and our ability to recognize students who demonstrate positive behavior at school while at the same time teaching students appropriate ways to engage with their teachers, peers and learning environment. We will be administering a survey this spring to parents, teachers and students to benchmark our progress to date in these areas.

The School Climate Survey is a student perception survey as part of our participation with PPSC. This survey is anonymous. We will not know how your child, a parent or a staff member responds to the questions. The survey for elementary school students (grades 3rd-5th) includes 11 questions and should take no more than 10–15 minutes to complete. Students will complete this survey in their class. Additionally, there are demographic questions, including grade, gender, race, and ethnicity. (Learn more about PPSC at the Michigan Technical Assistance Center website.)

The data collected from the survey will be used to identify student perceptions of school climate issues. School staff use the results to inform their efforts at improving school climate. Demographic data is needed in order to disaggregate the results by different groups to look at perceptions of school climate from different students’ perspectives. There are also parent and staff versions of the survey that will be examined along with the student results.

Responses are housed securely and in an anonymous format with the University of Oregon Technical Assistance Center projects for evaluation research purposes. All evaluation research projects are in compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, (343 CFR 99.31 (6)) and human subjects regulations (Protection of Human Subjects 45 CFR 46).

Per our Board Policy 2416-Procedures for Inspection of Materials Used in Conjunction with any Survey, Analysis, or Evaluation; if you would like to review this survey in advance, you may do so by contacting the school office. If upon review, at a parent’s discretion, you may request that your child be excused from participation.

Our desire is to involve parents in their children’s education. Working together we can continue our forward progress of establishing a building climate and culture that ensure high levels of academic rigor and instruction in the classroom and ensuring that all students have equitable access for participation. If you have questions, please contact your building Principal. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this important activity, please sign and return this form to the school by September 25,2020.

STUDENT WELLNESS SURVEY

Holland Public Schools knows supporting students' social and emotional wellness is critical to their overall academic success and growth. This year is unlike any we have experienced and the health and safety of our students remains our top priority. This school year, Holland Public Schools will join other districts around the country in administering surveys and questionnaires to all students in an effort to promote the health and wellbeing of students.

Students are routinely screened for physical health issues (e.g., vision, hearing) and academics, however, emotional or behavioral health issues are generally detected after they have already emerged. The increased stress along with changes to our day-to-day routines due to the pandemic, make it imperative that schools partner with families to help students thrive. The information collected will provide a snapshot of student mental wellbeing to inform planning, to identify individual students who might benefit from early support, and to consider the impact of early support and targeted interventions.

The SAEBRS (Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) will be used by staff in conjunction with a brief wellness survey that will be administered by classroom teachers to their students once a semester.  Information gained will be used to connect students to appropriate resources such as health professionals, school social workers or counselors or to identify if additional follow up is needed.  The parents of children who have been identified for additional support services will be contacted before any services are provided. We are committed to ensuring your child is supported academically, socially, and emotionally, and we look forward to collaborating with each of you toward achieving this goal.

Per School Board Policy 2416-Procedures for Inspection of Materials Used in Conjunction with any Survey, Analysis, or Evaluation; if you would like to review the materials in advance, you may do so by contacting the school office. If upon review, you may request that your child be excused from participation. Please contact Anna Clawson at 494-2217 with questions. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this important activity, please sign and return this form to the school by Friday, September 25, 2020 OR click this link to complete the form online.
