HPS Commemorates MLK Day 2020

Local Events to Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day- January 20, 2020

  1. Grand Valley State UniversityYusef Salaam will deliver the keynote at 2:00pm on Jan. 20 at the Fieldhouse Arena on the campus of GVSU.  Yusef Salaam was 15 years old in 1989 when he and four other teenagers were wrongly accused and convicted of attacking and raping a woman in New York City’s Central Park. Collectively known as the Exonerated Five, Salaam and the others spent seven-13 years in prison. After their sentences were overturned, Salaam and others were subjects of two documentaries. He is now an activist and noted lecturer.  (Other events throughout the week)
     

  2. Hope College- Xernona Clayton, a nationally renowned activist, television personality, CEO and philanthropist, will present the address “MLK: A Legacy of Love, Faith, Commitment and Sacrifice,” on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, at 2 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel (277 College Ave.). The public is invited.  Admission is free.
     

  3. Holland Museum-  How Would You Change the World? MLK Day at the Holland Museum.  Monday, Jan. 20, from 11:00am-4:00pm.  Free event. Please join us this MLK day for family activities all day long. Learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life by exploring a display in the museum lobby. Be inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.’s own words while watching a selection of his full-length speeches in the Museum lobby. Participate in a scavenger hunt in the museum galleries to learn about the Civil Rights Movement. In Spark!Lab, learn about inventors from diverse backgrounds who helped their communities. Create a make-and-take heart dream catcher craft and paint a stone of hope to add to your garden or windowsill to share how you might change the world!
     

  4. Herrick Library-  Main Library:  Stop in for an animated video celebrating the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work. Showing every 30 minutes between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m on Monday, January 20.  For ages 6 through adult. North Branch: Celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. by visiting the library to participate in volunteer opportunities that benefit our community. Activities will be available all day from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m on Jan. 20.
     

  5. GRCC, GVSU, Davenport University Collaboration- 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration-  Keynote Speaker: Dr. Yusef A. Salaam, Monday, January 20, 2020, 6:00 p.m.  Fountain Street Church (24 Fountain Street NE, Grand Rapids). The event is free and open to the public.  Doors open at 5:00 pm.
