Welcome to Emily Wells' webpage

Hello. I'm Emily Wells and this is my first year teaching in Holland Public Schools.  I teach biology and chemistry at New Tech High School.  Before joining the staff at New Tech, I taught biology and chemistry in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  I graduated from the Michigan State University teaching program in May 2010 after completing a yearlong internship teaching biology at Holt Senior High School in Holt, Michigan.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Zoo and Aquarium Science, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Integrated Science.  I am very excited to join Holland Public Schools, and the Holland community.  Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling, and spending time with family.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 616-494-2700 or e-mail me at ewells@hollandpublicschools.org

Chemistry

Students in chemistry are currently working on a project in which they are investigating the practice of hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" to access natural gas reserves trapped underground within shale rock.  This process has been widely discussed and debated in the media recently, and yet many people are still unfamiliar with what it is, and the potential costs and benefits of its increasing implementation.  We have tied the study of fracking in to our study of covalent compounds and how these compounds tend to behave in the environment, as many of the chemicals used in fracking are known to be harmful covalent compounds.  Students are creating a video and a letter for their local government.

Biology

Students in biology are starting a project in biology in which they will take on the role of a genetics counselor and provide background information and explanation to a family that is considering having another child.  In order to prepare them for this role, students will work on developing an individual and group portfolio that they can use to help support and prepare them for this role.

Most of our student work is posted on Echo for you to see. Please visit https://echo.newtechnetwork.org/  Please note that it takes you away from our  HPS website. I think you'll find this interesting and useful.  If you have difficulty viewing or accessing the information  as it's posted here, please let me know right away.
