Welcome to Joe Dummer's web page.
Welcome to American Studies and World Studies. These classes are a combined history and English class and are worth 2 credits each. My fellow instructor, Jay Woods, and I teach this class together and weave history and English during the double block of time.
AT NEW TECH:
We work in collaborative groups to deal with problems and projects that can be solved with an understanding of the subject matter. This is in preparation for real life when students will be asked to solve the world's problems. The students are graded on content as well as 5 school wide learning outcomes: Oral Communication, Written Communication, Work Ethic, Collaboration, and Technology.
Holland New Tech uses the ECHO grading and classroom management system. Upon enrollment, the student and parent can sign up for access. The ECHO system is where students will get their daily agendas, assignments, and where they will submit assignments and have access to all their grades.
Looking Ahead: (Feb)
American Studies - We will end this trimester by making a movie trailer. The students are to demonstrate their understanding of the themes and events in Romeo and Juliet and World War I by imaging a version of the play set during that time. They are to use the available technology to create a trailer for the movie.
World Studies - We will end this trimester by studying absolutism. The students will have to argue if America is leaning away from its democratic ideals and towards an absolute ruler. They then must decide if this is a good thing and if an absolute ruler would be the answer to America's problems today. The students will display this information through a format called common craft.
