Meet the administrative assistant
Vanessa Fuentes is secretary, a.k.a. “Jane of All Trades,” at New Tech High School. Her smile is usually the first to greet students, staff and visitors to the school. Fuentes’ supports all school functions, from answering the phones to scheduling tours of the building for business partners and visiting educators.
The former Vanessa Marquez moved to Holland when she was 10 years old with her mother and six older sisters from the Mexican state of Durango. Her father had found permanent work in Holland years before.
She gained her first work experience in a school office at Holland High School through the co-op program before her graduation in 2000 . Fuentes continued working part-time with Holland Public Schools while earning her associate’s degree in business administration at Davenport University. After some other secretarial positions, she returned to the district full time in 2007, dividing her time between the Washington Administrative Building, Holland Heights and now, New Tech.
“This is an exciting school,” Fuentes said. “Students are learning and interacting in brand new ways. It’s great to be part of it.”
