Welcome to Tam Troff's web page

Hi.  My name is Tamsin Troff and I am a teacher at Holland High School.  The 2011-12 school year will be my thirty-third at our high school.  (Each one gets better!) I have a BS in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University, and an MA in Special Education; Learning Disabled from Grand Valley State University.

The classes that I teach are in the area of Special Education.  I teach four different classes.  They are.1st hour Earth Science; 2nd hour Reading; 3rd hour Resource Class; 4th hour Writing,  I have fifth hour as my prep hour and I can best be reached at that time. 2:01-3:14) My phone number is (616) 494-2200 ex 2319

I am available to you if you want to talk to me.  My planning hour is from 2:01 to 3:14.  I can also be reached after school or before, but I do not answer my phone when I am working with students.  (At those times you may call, and you will go into my voicemail and I will call you back.)

In Earth Science we will be studying

  • The Moving Earth
  • Gravity
  • The moon
  • The Sun
  • Planets
  • Stars
  • Comets/Meteors
  • The Earth
  • Volcanoes

For Reading:

Daily Schedule: Students will be assigned to a group in which they should plan to stay for at least the trimester.

Mrs. Taylor: Vocabulary Building/Abbreviations; Comprehension Skills; Basic Writing Skills (Complete sentences, 3-5 sentence sequential, but basic paragraphs.)

Ms. Troff: Direct Instruction Comprehension; Direct Instruction Spelling, Individualized Lexia

Students: You will be graded each week on your effort, group work, and spelling you cannot show effort if you are not here, so excessive absences may count against you.

Resource is designed to give students a class period in which to complete and receive assistance with coursework from other classes. Once homework and studying is completed, students have 2 choices. 1st, they may do independent reading. 2nd involved the opportunity to further life skills knowledge in the areas of cooking, computers, and math.

In Writing class we work on real life writing experiences.  We try to get very clever and creative while using the best punctuation and sentence structure.  We work on writing complete sentences, using proper end marks, eliminating fragment sentences and run-on sentences, writing simple paragraphs that are indented and stick to the topic, and letter writing and narrative writing.

My rules to live by for the classroom are simiple

  1. Treat others the way you want to be treated
  2. No Swearing: to anyone, at anyone, about anyone
  3. Do what you are asked to do in a timely manner

Here are 7 things to help your child succeed in school:

  1. Teens need at least 9 hours of sleep
  2. Set limits to screen time. This includes texting. (experts say no more than 2 hours total, with everything turned off by 9:00pm)
  3. Know what's going on in school by have your child be responsible for homework and other requirements.
  4. Put families first. (Experts say to eat a meal together at least three times a week.)
  5. Get to know your child's friends and possibly your child's friend's parents.
  6. Help out at school. Know the teachers.
  7. Help your child learn to be a hard worker withgood morals. Teach them to be trustworthy and responsible.

Looking ahead, we will be going to Chicago in May. We have many, many other activities planned for the year.  I will keep you posted.
