Hi!  My name is Susan Miller.  I am a health and wellness teacher in the Family and Consumer Science Department at Holland High School.  During the 2016-2017 school year, I will be teaching Working on Wellness, Health Careers, Health II, and Human Growth and Development.  This year, students can access information, announcements, and assignments in school email accounts, Google Classroom and Edmodo.

In Working on Wellness, my focus is to help students take personal responsibility for their health by exploring and learning health information  which will empower them to make healthy decisions.  Students will learn prevention strategies that may protect them from diseases that run in the family.  Exercise and good nutrition will be emphasized.  The topics we will research and study include:  wellness, nutrition, physical activity, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, stress management, mental health, healthy relationships, and reproductive health.  The Working on Wellness classes will exercise twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Don't forget your gym clothes!!!!

Health II is an elective class for those students who have an interest in Health and want to continue to study health related topics and/or pursue a Health Career.  Students will be required to take Working on Wellness or Health I prior to taking Health II as this class is an extension of the required health class. Students can become certified in CPR if adequate progress is achieved in the subject matter.  Other topics to be studied include, the healthy family, violence prevention, first aid, community health, environmental health, and consumer health.

In Health Careers, students will explore various health occupations and the skills and talents necessary for these careers. Students will learn about important medical discoveries and current medical issues.  An introduction to medical vocabulary will be studied.  Students will also write a professional cover letter and resume and participate in a “mock interview” with members of the staff.  Members of the Health Careers class will also be exposed to guest speakers who are currently working in the field.  Hands on opportunities will be provided.

In Human Growth and Development, students will learn the importance of a positive attitude and self esteem, setting goals, making healthy decisions which includes abstinence, and working hard to be the best student they can be.  We will study "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" and chart a course for a successful future.

I am also co-advisor of the senior graduation ceremony with Mrs. Emily Armstrong.  We assist seniors in the ordering process of their caps and gowns.  We also work with students on the graduation committee to develop and plan the details of the graduation ceremony.  If you have questions about ordering the cap and gown or the graduation ceremony, I can be reached at 494-2345.

I feel privileged to work with your sons and daughters and look forward to a great school year!
