Welcome to Beth Mawdsley-Sherwood's Web Page
Greetings! I am Beth Mawdsley Sherwood. This is my sixteenth year in the Holland Public Schools, and I have had the pleasure of teaching English Language Arts in the 7th through 11th grades. I greatly enjoy literature, literary analysis, and the writing process. This year, I am teaching three sections of Honors English 9, two sections of English 9, and an Advisory class.
The new course units support and align with the Common Core State Standards, and follow the MAISA (Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators) refined English Language Arts 9th grade curriculum. The units are purposefully designed to be student-centered to promote student engagement, and sequenced to increasingly build content and strengthen student skills. Vocabulary, academic and literary, is emphasized. Formative and summative assessments are incorporated into the units, and students will routinely work on projects utilizing technology. Becoming increasingly effective 21st Century critical thinkers and creative communicators - in reading, writing (utilizing the John Collins Writing Program), speaking, listening, and language - and to effectively engage, collaborate, and critically think are major goals.
First semester units include: Launching Writer's Notebook, Reading Independently, Narrative Reading, and Literary Essay.
Second semester units include: Basics of Argumentation Marketing and Media, Reading Nonfiction/Strategic Reading of Informational Text, Informational Essay, and Argument Writing Genres/Personal Essay.
Daily agendas are found on Edmodo, and grades are frequently updated in Infinite Campus to ensure ongoing awareness of student standings.
