9th Annual Fall Quiz Bowl Tournament
Saturday, Nov. 15
9:30 am - 2:30 pm
Hosted in the HHS "B Wing"
In Quiz Bowl action, the Holland High Quiz Bowl team opened the season in rousing fashion, competing at the Jan Rademacher Invitational at White Cloud High School. In total, 35 teams from 18 different schools competed in the event, and the DNA (Dutch Nerd Army) performed very well. Holland High was represented by 20 students on 5 different teams (see first attached picture). Complete results are posted below as well.
The 9th and 10th grade units included many students involved in their first QB competition. Given that, the teams performed very well, and gained some good experience.
The 11th grade team (HHS11 pic below, L --> R: Jarod Riemersma, Sarah Anderson, Sam Koch, Todd Goding, and Max Lam) won their division with an 8-1 record on the day. This officially counts as a varsity level tournament win and qualifies HHS for the State Finals in the spring. Well done!
The 12th grad A team (HHS12 pic below, L-->R: Paul Richmond, Raymond Surya, Dan Timmermann, and Anna Minnebo) started the day with a tough loss to Tippecanoe, OH (perennial National qualifier), then proceeded to run the table, including a win over perennial power Detroit Catholic Central. This qualified the team for the Grand Championship on stage, where they resoundingly defeated the host team for the overall championship of the tournament. This makes Holland High eligible for National Competition this spring.
Special props go to the Holland 12B team of Izak Fritz and Tony Perez. As a team of only two, they were placed at a great disadvantage, but they competed hard and eked out a win in the afternoon session. You two guys showed great sportsmanship and determination. I am very proud of you.
All in all, it was a great start to the season. The DNA will be in action again on November 15, when we host the 9th Annual HHS Fall Quiz Bowl Invitational.
