Garcia wins 8th State Swimming Title

Holland swimmer becomes second most decorated state champion

After winning three state team championships over the last three years, fans of the Lady Dutch swim team envisioned them to possibly "four-peat" as champion at the 2014 MHSAA Division II Girls Swimming & Diving Finals, held at the Holland Aquatic Center, Nov. 21-22. History did not repeat itself as the team finished in 10th place but it provided a memorable end to the high school career of Holland High senior Taylor Garcia.

Garcia, who came into the Finals undefeated in her state meet career, added more hardware to her collection of swimming championships. She claimed the 100 yard butterfly title in a time of 53.95, breaking the state-record of 54.01 set by herself last year. She also claimed the 100 yard backstroke title with a time of 53.37. Her time in the preliminary was 53.13.

Garcia's eight individual Finals titles, four each in the butterfly and backstroke over the last four years, makes her the second most decorated swimmer for total state championships won, tying the all-time record with Birmingham Groves' Dana Christ set in 2006. She also has six relay state titles - from the last three seasons that helped the Lady Dutch win the last three team championships, bringing her total to 14. At the 2011 Division II Finals, Garcia and the Lady Dutch swim team set a new State and National record in the 200 yard medely relay with a time of 1:41:01, a record still not broken to this date.

Garcia was also named Division II Swimmer of the Year for the third consecutive year.
