Greeting from Mrs. Voss
Hello. I'm Lisa Voss and I've taught in Holland Public Schools for 19 years. Welcome to my introduction page! I teach 6th grade S.S. with a text called Geography Alive! Regions and Peoples and 7th grade S.S. with History Alive! The Ancient World at Holland East K-7. I have taught for Holland Pubic Schools since 1993; and I cannot think of a better place to be! The young people of Holland are dear to me!
IN 6rd GRADE: We started the year with an exciting chapter about economics. It asks students to consider why our shoes are often made in Asia. This "global sneaker" focus deals with costs, profits, wages, consumers, free trade, and many other economic concepts. This has been done in preparation for the MEAP. Our students have been doing so well on the basic map skills that getting some experience with globalization and its affects on people and places has been a fabulous opportunity to learn together right before these topics may appear on the MEAP.
Starting the last week of September, our focus will be basic geography skills and concepts. Chapter 1 and 2 will be accomplished in their Interactive Student Notebooks, or ISNs. These ISNs stay in the classroom unless your student needs more time to prepare for a test or make up missed work.
IN 7th GRADE: For most of the students, this is our second year together, so we have jumped right in to our new textbook. The Paleolithic Era, a.k.a. the old stone age, was a way to learn how history is studied by archeologists, historians, and geographers. Humans were nomadic hunters and gatherers at this time in history. We actually explored a cave, albeit a fictional cave. The test was taken in the third week of September. Chapter 2 asks students to consider the differences between the old stone age and the new stone age, a.k.a. the Neolithic Era. This era is when humans developed agriculture, established more permanent homes and communities, and started to work more efficiently. The test will be taken at the end of September.
LOOKING AHEAD (October): Parents will want to take note that progress reports are coming home soon. For the teachers, the grades are due to the office via Infinite Campus on Monday, October 3.
Please make sure to check your child's student planner regularly. These planners are checked Wednesdays in all S.S. classes. Your child earns 10 points in their formative grades each week for their planners and SSR (silent sustained reading), but they can earn a bonus point if you have signed their planners.
FYI - Grades are calculated in two categories:
Formative grades are daily work, homework, etc. while summative grades are an average of tests, projects, and quizzes.
6th grade - 40% summative and 60% formative
7th grade - 30% summative and 70% formative
