From Mr. Cassidy, Principal
Only 13 school days left in December before break begins on 12/22 and there is much going on at East in that time.
Monday, December 5th from 6:30-7:30pm- Technology Night for the parents of 6th and 7th Grade Students at East in the green hall. A raffle will be held for those who attend. A technology specialist will be there to present to parents about how to monitor your students on technology and show you some of the great things our students are able to do on their chromebooks. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the East office.
Reading Program- East is starting a reading program with incentives. Students can earn points by reading books at their appropriate reading level and then taking short on-line quizzes. We are doing a trial run in December and students who earn 25 points before break will celebrate with a pizza party. We will use the data from December to set goals and incentive levels for students after break. Encourage your student to read and take the quizzes online. Computers will be available in class at designated times and we are going to try to arrange to have the computer labs open from 7:30-8:00am everyday. See the paragraph below about needed volunteers.
Parent Survey Winner- During the month of November parents had the opportunity to take an on-line school climate survey. All parents who completed this survey were entered into a drawing for a $25 Barnes and Noble. The winner of the gift card was Tara Schafer.
Box Tops- Please send collect and send in Box Tops for Education. This is an Easy way to raise money for our school. Ask friends and relatives to collect them as well. There is a friendly competition between classes on who can raise the most.
9-Square-in-the-Air Court- With some money from last year’s Box Tops, a 9-Square-in-the-Air court will be assembled for students. Our Middle Schoolers have had a great time playing this game at Camp and a team of them will help teach elementary students how to play.

Volunteering – We are looking for parents who may be interested in volunteering from 7:30-8:00 am to help keep the computer lab open for students to come in and read and take online Reading Counts Quizzes. Contact Mr. Cassidy if you are interested. Please be sure to turn in your volunteer form as soon as possible and check with your child’s teacher about ways that you can get involved and help. This is especially important with some of the different activities coming up in the classroom.
Shout Outs - Did you know that every week Mr. Cassidy sends out an email to staff called “The Holla”? It is an accumulation of positive notes provided to him about our staff from staff, parents, and community members. If you have something positive that you would like to share, please send an email to Mr. Cassidy at email@example.com.
Holland East 6th graders Nicole Vega, Alasha Greer and Esperanza Cruz recently raised over $400 for Jake Gainey, a student who attends the SXI program at Holland East. Jake has cerebral palsy and an eye disease. The girls asked fellow students to contribute silver coins to their fund.
The funds were donated to Jake's family who is raising money to fund a lift for a van. This will help Jake be more mobile.
