Present: Iria Turnes, Tonya Book, Meg Owen, Kim DeJongh, Cindy Bosman, Nancy Horgan, Beth Seiler, Kirsten Oonk, Lori Terpsma, Dana Loveland, Meg Fitch.
Meeting began @ 8:30a.m.
1.) Welcome and VP Report from Beth Seiler
-Tuesink’s Farm family night highlights
2.) Treasurer Report: Nancy Horgan could not be here, so Beth submitted West’s monthly report for November for review. Included in this is a synopsis of PTO funding in years past, the largest amount going towards field trips. In addition, $100 in cash is given to each teacher for classroom supplies. This is the 2nd largest amount, followed by assemblies. In addition, additional PTO grant monies have been awarded to teachers in excess of $35,000 over the last three years.
3.) Fundraising Report: Robyn Lovely Huizenga could not be here, so Beth reported on her behalf.
-Fall fundraiser: profits were way down this year.
-Box tops: Get those box tops turned in because they really do make a difference! We will be receiving $2400 in December for boxtops already turned in, and West has already reached it’s goal for the entire year! Along with boxtops, Spartan UPCs area accepted as well. Tonya Book thought it would be a good idea to inquire if our partner, Christ Memorial Church, could make a plea to its members to save their boxtops and UPCs for West.
4.) Staff Appreciation: Meg Fitch reported on the successful PTO soup and salad bar provided to West staff during conference week. Casie Essenberg is interested in putting together a PTO cookie exchange to provide staff with a tin of cookies for the holidays. Meg and Casie will coordinate this event and recruit volunteer bakers. Future plans include providing the staff with a monthly breakfast coffee/goodies morning in the lounge.
5.) Upcoming Events:
-The Holiday Concert is scheduled for December 7 and includes children from Holland Heights and West. The event will be at Central Wesleyan Church @ 7pm. Children need to arrive by 6:45.
-Holiday Crafts: Cindy Bosman will chair this event, as in previous years. K-5 students will have the opportunity to make 3 crafts for $2.00. Flyers will be sent to families with envelope attached. Including extra cash in the envelope to help those in need will be encouraged.
6.) Principal’s Report: Dana Loveland reported that the East K-7 “Family Feast” will be held on November 24 @ 12:30. The concept of East’s school families was explained and Dana reported that West is planning to kick-off its own version, possibly this winter. A family fun night run by staff with a theme of the Olympics and measuring will take place at West on January 12. January 22 there will be no school, as well as February 15, mid-winter break day. Dana discussed the building wide bucket-filling classroom concept put in place at West, as well as future assembly ideas.
7.) New Business: Planning for a winter carnival night at West, similar to the carnival hosted by Harrington. Do we organize it as a profit maker? Tonya Book suggested an auction similar to Bid for Kids. Dana described a similar auction that included the students assembling baskets sponsored by each classroom and then auctioned off, with special offerings of teachers’ time and talents. The date for a carnival should be in early February. Do we provide a meal, such as pizza or hot dogs? A meal certainly will get people to come. What about a chili cook-off?
Meeting adjourned @ 10:30.
